While many patients just think that our professionals will be inspecting their teeth during an exam and cleaning, this is not the case. There are other rutine checks that the dentist will go through when you visit our office. You will also have your oral cavity and gums carefully examined. The gums are checked for signs of chronic conditions such as gum disease and also for abnormalities that could be indicative of oral cancer. If these conditions are detected, then our team will recommend additional treatment as appropriate.
How Are My Gums Checked?
In order to check for signs of gum disease, our professionals will take measurements of the pockets between your teeth and gums. These pockets should normally be between 1mm and 3mm in depth. Pockets that are over 3mm deep are likely inflamed as a result of gum disease. Pockets that are over 5mm in depth are a sign of advanced gum disease and will likely require surgical intervention.
In addition, our team will visually inspect your gums for signs of oral cancer. Signs of oral cancer include sores or lesions that have not healed or have even grown in size. Early detection of any abnormal developments is vital to achieving positive outcomes with any treatment.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a chronic oral health condition that is characterized by inflammation in the gums. This inflammation happens when plaque builds up along the gum line and in the pockets between your gums and teeth. Over time, this plaque hardens into a substance called tartar, which cannot be removed with regular brushing and flossing.
Poor gum health will not only affect the aesthetics of your smile, but it can ultimately lead to tooth decay or even tooth loss. Regular oral exams are the best way to guard against these conditions and maintain a healthy smile. You can contact our office for more information.
