Lack of Flossing Is Connected to Weight Gain

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Tigran Khachatryan
Lack of Flossing Is Connected to Weight GainMost people tend to ignore flossing as part of routine dental practices. Besides cleaning the spaces between your teeth, flossing prevents gum disease, which links to weight gain. Therefore, embracing this practice is important if you want to manage your weight.

Flossing and Metabolism

Failure to floss may result in tooth decay and gum disease. Gum inflammation stresses your body and affects your metabolism. If the inflammation on your gum spreads to the body's fat cells, it will inhibit their ability to control insulin. This causes them to convert glucose and store it as fats instead of using it for energy, resulting in obesity. Fat cells may also start leaking the fatty acids into the blood vessels. The accumulation of these fats on blood vessels will cause them to narrow; hence, causing hypertension in obese people.

Gum Inflammation Will Cause Obesity

As the body battles gum disease, it will release inflammatory compounds into the system. This release alters your body's utilization of leptin protein, which helps us feel hungry or full. If you feel hungry most of the time, you will increase your food intake and become obese. The inflammation may also cause fatigue, making it difficult for you to stick to a healthy exercise routine. Gum disease also has a link with chronic diseases such as diabetes. Diabetes will worsen with gum disease, resulting in fatigue, making it difficult for you to exercise. Diabetes also affects body metabolism and weight.

How to Remedy Obesity

Failure to floss your teeth will result in gum disease, which predisposes you to weight gain. Therefore, to prevent gum disease, you should brush and floss your teeth at least twice daily. Regular dental checkups will also help in the early detection and treatment of gum disease to prevent weight gain. For more details on weight gain and flossing, contact our office today.
