Do You Need a Scaling and Root Planing?

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Tigran Khachatryan
Do You Need a Scaling and Root Planing?Patients with gingivitis or gum disease may need to undergo a treatment called root planing or scaling. This procedure is done to remove bacteria and plaque growing underneath the gum line, causing damage to teeth. Therefore, you need to be aware of the signs that you need scaling or root planing. Bleeding gums, inflamed tissues, and deep pockets are among the signs that will show you might need scaling or root planing.

Bleeding Gums

The slightest appearance of blood when you brush or floss is an indicator that there are bacteria below your gum line. This will need timely cleaning through scaling procedures that eliminate plaque and bacteria. Consistent brushing and flossing will ensure that the bacteria doesn't come back after undergoing this procedure.

Inflamed Tissue

This is another sign that shows you need root planing or scaling. You will notice swelling and redness around certain teeth as gingivitis develops. As much as this is less serious compared to an abscess, it still means that there is a bacterial infection that needs urgent care. Scaling can help remove the deposits and protect the tooth roots, keeping out plaque that could settle on such areas.

Deep Pockets

You need tight pockets to hold your teeth in place as you chew and bite. When we check your dental pockets and find that they are more than four millimeters deep, we will recommend a scaling procedure. This is because if a deep pocket is left untreated, it can cause significant damage to the root of your tooth. Brushing or flossing with deep pockets can result in tooth loss. This is because the tooth will be loose and any vigorous activity like chewing can knock it out. We recommend that you undergo a scaling procedure to fix this problem right away.
