Implant Care
Bellevue, WA

Thanks to advancements in dental technology, there are many tooth replacement options that can help restore your smile. Dental implants are one of the best and most reliable tooth replacement choices that can elevate your self-esteem and make you more confident about your smile even after tooth loss.

It is important to remember that with proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. However, this care must begin from the minute you step out of your dentist’s clinic.

So, if you’ve gotten implants or are planning to get them, here is what you need to know about implant care.

Brush Daily with a Soft Toothbrush

You will probably need to switch your toothbrush to clean your implants. The best choice is a soft nylon toothbrush as its bristles are not only gentle on your implants, but can also clean hard-to-reach areas around your implants. It is important to avoid toothbrushes with hard bristles as they can scratch the surface of your implants.

Floss Regularly

Flossing regularly is equally important as brushing. You’re not supposed to floss once in a while when you get something stuck in your teeth; it is meant to be a permanent part of your daily dental care routine. However, if you were negligent before, things will have to change once you get implants. The reason why flossing is so important is that it helps get rid of any food remnants that accumulate around your implants that can cause oral hygiene issues. The good news is that there are many types of flosses that are designed specifically for those with dental implants.

Stick to Mild and Sensitive Products

You need to stick to purchasing sensitive oral cleaning products to make the most out of your dental implants. Whether you’re buying toothpaste or mouthwash, remember to avoid abrasive and harsh products that contain too many chemicals as it can cause extreme discomfort. It is also best to avoid oral hygiene products with intense flavors such as mint or cinnamon as these can cause discomfort.

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

Once you get dental implants, you can’t eat any hard or sticky foods as it can damage your implants. While implants do restore your chewing and biting ability, it’s best to avoid certain foods altogether. Hard and sticky foods, including caramel, ice, dried fruits, hard candies, apples, and steak should be avoided after getting implants as they can damage your opposing teeth as well.

Don’t Forget Your Regular Visits to the Dentist

While dental implants can improve the aesthetics and functionality of your smile, they aren’t a cure for all dental hygiene issues. You should visit your dentist at least twice a year to ensure that your implants, along with the rest of your teeth, remain clean and healthy.
